City of Frederick Leaders Share 2010 Priorities with Delegation

December 3, 2009 by Hecht Yes News

City officials met with members of the Frederick County legislative delegation on December 2, 2009, to present their top priorities for the 2010 General Assembly.

Acknowledging dire budget challenges facing local and state government, the City officials requested a statewide change to traffic citation procedures. The requested proposal would allow an opt-in procedure for traffic tickets. The City projected this would save the amount of time a police officer has to appear in court. Police Chief Kim Dine said a more pro-active court scheduling system could save the Police Department thousands of dollars in overtime costs.

The City’s other top request would allow the municipality to tap other source of revenue, including recordation taxes from real estate transactions and excise taxes from construction. This request would also look at a tax differential solution to lower county property taxes for city residents who pay both city and county property taxes.

“Communication among city, county and state officials is very important. Unless we sit down at the same table and air these things, we’re not going to have a good decision-making process. This meeting was a good example of how we can all work together,” said Delegate Hecht.
